About Australian Mechanic
Welcome to Australian Mechanic. This site was created by car lovers who spend more time under the bonnet than behind a desk.
We’re not part of a dealership. We’re not backed by a magazine. We’re a small team of mechanics, writers and long-time car enthusiasts who wanted a space to share real-world knowledge without the jargon or sales pitch.
Whether you’re trying to work out why your check engine light is on, wondering how often you should replace your timing belt, or just want to understand your car a bit better, you’re in the right place.
We believe in practical advice you can actually use. That means:
• Straight answers to common questions
• No fluff or fear-mongering
• And a strong belief that you shouldn’t need a second mortgage to keep your car running
We write about what we know from experience. And if we don’t know something, we’ll ask someone who does. This site is here to make life a little easier for anyone who drives, fixes or owns a car in Australia.
If you’re the type of person who likes to learn how things work, save money on repairs, or just get a better deal at the mechanic, we hope this site helps.
Thanks for stopping by. Let us know what you’d like to see next.

Disclaimer:
Everything you read here is based on real experience, solid advice and a genuine attempt to help. If you decide to follow any of the tips or information on this site, that’s entirely your call and we’re all for it. But just so we’re clear, we can’t take responsibility if something goes sideways. Cars can be unpredictable, and what works in one situation might not suit another. We wish we didn’t have to say this, but there’s always someone out there ready to point fingers. So use common sense, stay safe, and always double-check things if you’re unsure.
Meet the Australian Mechanic team

Kaitlyn Hughes - Writer and Workshop Regular
Kaitlyn didn’t grow up around cars, but she’s been making up for lost time ever since she bought her first one. What started as casual curiosity quickly turned into a deep dive into the world of mechanics and car ownership.
Over the years, she’s spent countless hours in independent workshops, asking questions, watching repairs, and learning from the people who actually do the work. Her strength lies in turning technical information into easy-to-understand advice for everyday drivers.
Kaitlyn has a soft spot for European hatchbacks, a growing knowledge of diagnostics, and a genuine passion for helping people feel more confident when it comes to their cars. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her on a back road with a playlist running and a lukewarm servo coffee in hand.

George Matthews - Independent Mechanic of 20 Years
George has worked as a mechanic in independent Brisbane workshops for over two decades. He started out on old Holdens and Falcons, and over the years developed a strong reputation for his no-nonsense, honest approach to car repair.
He’s seen just about every issue that can bring a car into a workshop, from worn-out suspension to turbo failures and tricky electrical faults. George believes in practical advice, straight talk, and helping drivers avoid the nonsense that often comes with modern motoring.
When he’s not fixing cars or writing about them, George enjoys weekends on the water, spending time with his family, and keeping a few classic spares in the boot just in case.
